Keep all the right things in your wardrobe, with mindful choices

Have you ever found yourself succumbing to the allure of a captivating catalogue or a late night, wine fuelled, online shopping spree?  Only to later realise that those tempting purchases don’t quite align with your lifestyle? We’ve all been there, I certainly have.

Catalogue and Online Shopping

The other day, I received a Boden catalogue – a brand I’ve loved for years because they fit me well and they are really good with colour.  As I flipped through the pages, I couldn’t help but be drawn to an outfit featuring a gorgeous striped skirt and matching  jumper in my perfect shade of red. (See the image above) The whole outfit seemed to radiate a style I aspire to. Catalogues and online platforms often have a unique way of presenting complete looks, enticing us to imagine ourselves in those carefully curated outfits.

Resisting the Temptation

However, before hitting the ‘Buy Now’ button, I took a moment to reflect. Would I realistically wear this outfit often? Did it complement my existing wardrobe, or was it a standalone piece? These questions are crucial in preventing impulsive purchases that might end up as a wardrobe misfit.

Making Informed Choices

Nowadays I consider several factors before making a decision:

  1. Occasion Frequency: Realistically assessing how often I would have the opportunity to wear the outfit. In this case, I recognised that the skirt didn’t fit with my daily style and would only be suitable for very few occasions. And what shoes would I wear?
  2. Existing Wardrobe: Taking stock of what I already own, I acknowledged that I have an ample collection of jumpers and other items that could cover similar occasions, so this one would be redundant.
  3. Budget Conscious: Understanding that my money could be better spent elsewhere is so important, especially as I am trying to be planet as well as budget conscious. By making thoughtful choices, I ensure that my wardrobe investment aligns with my priorities and preferences.

The Power of Reflection

By taking a moment to pause and reflect, I avoided adding an impractical item to my wardrobe. It’s a practice that can save you not only money but also valuable wardrobe space.

How Often Do You Get Tempted?

Reflecting on your own shopping habits can be enlightening. How often do you find yourself tempted by enticing catalogues or online displays? Are there items in your wardrobe that don’t earn their keep?
