What Is Smart Casual?
Smart Casual style of dressing can often be the most confusing?
I hear this all the time from my clients and friends.
They get an invitation that says the dress code is ‘Smart Casual’ and they start to panic – what actually does that mean?
👗👗👗
The actual definition
of Smart Casual, crosses the line between formal and informal. It’s a blend of polished and put together, but also comfortable and relaxed.
Confusing in itself?
Another way of describing it, would be relaxed elegance.
The Occasion
Smart Casual also varies widely depending on the context, occasion and the style of the event.
What’s considered smart casual in a corporate event, might be very different from what’s expected at a social gathering. This ambiguity leads to confusion, making it challenging to hit the right note.
Overdressing can make you seem out of touch, while underdressing might come off as disrespectful or too laid-back. Understanding the setting and gauging the level of formality is crucial to mastering Smart Casual.
In my opinion, the key to mastering the Smart Casual dress code, is to have a versatile wardrobe and a good sense of what’s current. Also, a good range of accessories that can elevate something more casual.
Example of Smart Casual
This is an outfit I chose for a fundraising dinner held in a relaxed restaurant. the dress code on the invitation said – you guessed it – Smart Casual
I knew it would be warm inside, so I didn’t want a heavy jacket. I dressed up this simple summer dress with a wedge sandals and a dressy, quilted bag, plus a cream cardigan to take me from the car to the venue.

Review
Cath struggled with dressing for the right occasion and this it what she wrote after our session…
“I highly recommend working with Alison. I had an amazing session and walked away knowing my body shape, and what styles, colours and patterns suit me, and make me feel good. Also had a make-up lesson and feel much more confident in knowing what shades to wear and how to apply it. Very excited to practice what I learnt. Thank you Alison!”
