As we enter our 50s and 60s, changes in our body shape is a  common occurrence (just in case you hadn’t noticed!)

Hormonal shifts, lifestyle changes, natural aging and health issues, can all have the effect of transforming a slim, balanced figure into a fuller apple shape.

It’s easy to get frustrated when trying to adapt your clothing choices to fit a different body shape, while maintaining a sense of confidence and style.

The key to dressing any body shape lies in creating balance, drawing attention to your best features, and choosing cuts that are comfortable to wear and make you feel good.

If you do have a much larger tummy than you used to and not much of a defined waist. Here are a few style ideas…

1. Empire Waist Dresses

Empire waist dresses and blouses. They define the narrowest part of the body, just below the bust, and gently flow over the midsection. This style elongates the torso without clinging to the waistline.

Style Tip: Opt for dresses/blouses with a V-neckline to further elongate your upper body and draw attention to your face.

2. A-Line Dresses and Skirts

A-line silhouettes can work wonders for apple shapes, by skimming over the midsection and adding a flare from the waist down. These styles can create a more proportional look and emphasise your legs.

Style Tip: Choose fabrics that provide structure without being too stiff and  such as cotton blends or lightweight knits. Hemlines should finish on the slimmest part of the calf, or just below the knee.

3. Wrap Dresses and Tops

Wrap styles are a fantastic way to create a defined waistline while accommodating a fuller midsection. They provide an adjustable fit and highlight the bust, creating an hourglass illusion.

Style Tip: Look for wrap dresses with ruching or draping to camouflage areas of concern while enhancing your curves. Certain abstract and floral patterns can also help to ‘blur’ the eye.

4. Structured Jackets and Blazers

Adding a well-tailored jacket or blazer can work wonders for an apple-shaped body by creating definition at the shoulders and adding structure to your overall look. Choose single-button or open-front styles that skims the midsection rather than cling to it.

Style Tip: Pair a structured blazer with an empire line underneath. A block contrasting colour can work well here as it gives two vertical lines, to minimise width,

5. Trousers/Jeans

Choose straight or wide leg styles with a mid rise (about an inch below the belly button is good) Structured but not stiff fabrics which flow over your curves without clinging.
Style Tip: Don’t stick to baggy tops with trousers. try one of the ideas above and also a loose side tuck.

6. Monochrome Outfits

Dressing in a single color from head to toe creates a streamlined and elongated appearance. Monochromatic dressing helps to avoid breaking up the body visually, resulting in a more streamlined silhouette.

Style Tip: Experiment with different textures within the same color palette to add depth and interest to your look.

7. Statement Accessories

Accessories such as statement necklaces, earrings, or scarves can draw attention upward and away from the midsection. They also add a personal touch to any outfit and enhance overall style.

Style Tip: Avoid necklaces that rest across the chest, or or hang near the tummy when you sit down. If your bust is large, focus more on earrings, necklaces that fit into your v neck. Bracelets draw attention to wrists (one of the smallest areas of the body)

Conclusion

Dressing for an apple-shaped body doesn’t mean compromising on style or comfort. With the right cuts, fabrics, and styling tricks, you can continue to embrace your evolving bodies with confidence and grace.
