🍂 Falling in Love with Your Autumn Style: Experimenting with New Outfit Combinations
As we come into the cooler weather, I always find myself drawn to the rich, comforting tones of Autumn and a shopping trip to my wardrobe! Because our UK seasons have almost merged into two seasons over the last few years, spring and autumn are the perfect times to rediscover your wardrobe — and more importantly, to experiment.
We often fall into familiar outfit formulas that feel safe, but Autumn is an invitation to play again — with colour, texture, and shape — and to express who you are now, not who you were years ago, or even last year!
🍁 1. Start with Colour — Your Autumn Palette Evolved
Autumn light has a softer, golden tone that flatters warm, rich colours beautifully. We always see the shops full of moss greens, rich burgundy and all shades of chocolate. Firstly, go through your wardrobe and see what you have in ‘your’ version of autumn shades.
Don’t forget neutrals and explore texture layering: tweed, suede, and wool, denim, all bring depth even in simple shades.
If you’ve had your colours analysed, this is a great time to revisit your palette — our skin tone and hair colour can subtly change over time, so what once worked may now need a little fine-tuning. Do get in touch to discuss a Refresh
🧣 2. Rediscover What You Already Own
Before buying anything new, I always encourage my clients to shop their wardrobe. Pull out pieces you haven’t worn for a while and try combining them differently.
Things that may not have worked last year, may well work this year? Your ‘eye’ may have changed, your lifestyle and even your hair maybe different.
Sometimes it’s not about adding, but about seeing differently.
🍂 3. Play with Proportion and Layering
Autumn is made for layering — and for women over 60, it’s a wonderful way to stay stylish and comfortable.
Try these ideas:
-
A longline waistcoat over a lightweight jumper and trousers — chic without bulk.
-
A midi skirt with ankle boots for a modern silhouette that flatters most body shapes.
-
Layer different lengths — a longer shirt under a shorter jumper creates interest and elongates the body.
The key is to keep the overall balance — if one piece is voluminous, make the next one sleeker.
👜 4. Accessorise with Personality
Accessories are where your individuality shines. Try a silk scarf in your best autumn tones, or add layers of dainty necklaces, or go for some chunky statement jewellery over a simple long sleeved T Shirt or jumper.
Don’t forget handbags and boots — these are investment pieces that can instantly elevate a look. Deep tan, burgundy, and forest green work beautifully together this season. (I’ve just bought a green tote bag from TK Max )
☕ 5. Enjoy the Process
Autumn is all about transition — in nature and in life. For many of us, our 60 and beyond brings a shift in how we want to present ourselves. This is the perfect moment to ask, “What feels like me now?”
Experimenting doesn’t mean throwing away what you love. It means allowing yourself to evolve — to blend your experience, confidence, and creativity into something that feels utterly authentic.
So put on some music, pour yourself a cuppa, and spend an afternoon trying new combinations. You might surprise yourself.
✨ In summary
Autumn fashion isn’t about following trends — it’s about embracing change and expressing the woman you are today. Whether that means adding a new colour to your palette or simply rediscovering an old favourite.
