What is a balanced wardrobe? I get asked this a lot!

I talked about wardrobes last month – having the right clothes to suit your current lifestyle, body shape and preferences, but a client last week reminded me of an important factor that I’d left out.

Other

I’m going to call this ‘other’ because it’s a cover all for areas of our life which don’t necessarily need to be co-ordinated, or have a perfect fit. I’m talking about things like…

  • DIY
  • Gardening
  • Messy Hobbies

Plus ‘things that are worn out but I might use them for’– fill in the blank…

We need to get real with these. I see time and time again, big piles of T shirts, sweatshirts, leggings and tracksuit bottoms – that have all seen better days and all taking up precious space in drawers, cupboards and wardrobes.

Space we could use to streamline our every day wear, so we can mix and match more efficiently.

I hear ‘I’m keeping those for gardening. I need that for when I’m decorating’ I agree, most of us need some clothes for messy jobs but we must be realistic!

My Experience

When I moved house recently, I did a big wardrobe edit, but I also knew that I would be doing a lot of DIY in the first few months. As I sat and thought about it, I realised I only really need the following…

  • 1 pair of tracksuit bottoms
  • 1 short sleeve top
  • 1 long sleeve top
  • 1 warmer jumper/sweat top (for when the windows are all open)
  • 1 pair of socks

This can all be worn over and over until my projects are finished (with the occasional wash)

Here is what I ended up with – plus the jumper

When I’m done, they can go in the bin and by the time I do my next lot I will have worn out something else which I can use.

Going Forward

Gardening and muddy dog walking probably need more items than this because you do them more frequently, what I’m urging here is just a bit of realism. You really don’t need to keep ALL your old worn out things – remember, you will be wearing out as you go.

Decide what works for you and get rid of the rest.

If you need a little wardrobe help, please do get in touch, I would love to chat.

Until next time

Warmest wishes
