Packing for a trip should be exciting, not stressful. Yet it’s easy to find yourself sitting on an overstuffed suitcase, wondering how you managed to pack so much for just a few days away.
Whether you’re heading off for a weekend city break, a beach holiday, or a long-haul adventure, mastering the art of effortless packing can save time, money, and unnecessary stress.
The good news? Packing smarter isn’t just about taking less—it’s about taking the right things.
Why Packing Feels Harder Than It Used To
Airline baggage allowances have become stricter, travel has become more varied, and changing weather patterns can make destinations less predictable. Add in the desire to stay comfortable while still feeling stylish, and it’s easy to see why many of us struggle.
Here are the three biggest packing mistakes—and how to avoid them.
Packing Mistake #1: Overpacking
Many of us are guilty of packing for every possible scenario.
Extra shoes. Spare outfits. A jacket we probably won’t wear. Before we know it, our suitcase is bursting at the seams.
Not only can overpacking lead to expensive baggage fees!
The Solution: Pack with Purpose
Before opening your suitcase, write a simple packing list. Try this one…
Start with:
- Travel days
- Planned activities
- Essential medications and toiletries
- Weather-specific items
Then build outfits around a core colour palette so everything works together. (If you’d like some help redefining your palette, just pop me a message here)
Think of it as creating a holiday capsule wardrobe—a collection of versatile pieces that you can mix and match to create multiple looks.
A good rule of thumb is to lay everything out first, then remove at least three items. You probably won’t miss them.
Packing Mistake #2: Choosing Comfort or Style
Many travellers assume they have to choose between looking good and feeling comfortable.
The reality? Modern travel clothing has come a long way.
The Solution: Choose Smart, Versatile Pieces
Look for items that offer:
- Breathable fabrics
- Stretch and comfort
- Wrinkle resistance
- Day-to-evening versatility
A lightweight dress, tailored style, pull on trousers, or a smart linen shirt can work in multiple settings without taking up extra space.
When travelling, focus on layers. Airports, trains and planes can vary wildly in temperature, so a lightweight cardigan, jacket or scarf can become your best friend. (I never travel without my beige, cashmere scarf from TK Max- £30 worth of comfort)
And remember: comfortable shoes are non-negotiable. If you’re debating whether to pack a new pair, wear them before your trip and make sure they’re truly holiday-ready. Flip flop/toe pegs that were comfortable 6 months ago, may need ‘breaking in’ again.
Packing Mistake #3: Not Researching Your Destination
This is the mistake I’ve made most often.
With so much information available online, there’s really no excuse—but it’s surprisingly easy to assume a destination will be exactly as we remember it.
Weather patterns have become less predictable, local customs may have changed, and activities often require specific clothing or equipment.
The Solution: Do a Little Homework
Before travelling, check:
- Weather forecasts for the week you’ll be there
- Local dress codes and customs
- Planned excursions or activities
- Airline baggage rules
- Availability of essentials at your destination
Many travel apps now provide destination-specific packing recommendations, making preparation even easier.
Ten minutes of research can save hours of frustration later.
Bonus Tip #1: Embrace Digital Packing
Instead of carrying paperwork, consider storing:
- Boarding passes
- Hotel reservations
- Travel insurance documents
- Maps
- Emergency contact information
Securely on your phone or tablet.
Just remember to carry a portable charger and keep important documents backed up.
Bonus Tip #2: Compression Packing Cubes
If you’ve never used packing cubes, they can be a game changer.
Packing cubes are lightweight fabric organisers that help separate clothing, toiletries and accessories into neat compartments within your suitcase. Not only do they make it easier to find what you need, but they can also help maximise space and keep your luggage organised throughout your trip. The compression options allow you to pack way more within the same space.
I like to use different cubes for different categories—for example:
- Daywear
- Evening outfits
- Underwear and sleepwear
- Swimwear
- Electronics and chargers
The best part? When you arrive at your destination, unpacking becomes much quicker because everything is already organised.
Final Thoughts… effortless packing isn’t about being minimalist or fitting everything into a carry-on. It’s about travelling with confidence, staying organised, and making thoughtful choices that work for both you and the destination you’re visiting. With a little planning, a capsule wardrobe and a few packing cubes, you’ll be well on your way to packing smarter for every adventure.
