Does your sunscreen do enough to protect you and the planet?
We have sunshine at last, so it’s time to take a look at your sunscreen.
Did you know the 4 main causes of damage to your skin are:
Refined sugar – Alcohol – Smoking – Sun Exposure
Unlike the first 3, sunshine is also very good for us in other ways. Vitamin D boost and of course the ‘feel good’ factor, to name just two of the benefits – the trick is to be mindful and take care when exposed to more than 20 minutes of sunshine each day.
Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen every day when you are outside, not just when the sun is shining brightly? Therefore, wearing a moisturiser and or foundation that contains an SPF 15 is a great idea, even on dull days. Especially in the summer months.
Getting the best out of your sunscreen
On sunny days, when you are out and about, apply SPF 30 half an hour before going outside and then reapply every two hours. If you are going into water, ensure that your sunscreen is water-resistant.
If you find a bottle of sunscreen that you have not used for some time, here are some guidelines you can follow:
- All sunscreens have to retain their original strength for at least three years, by Law. If your sunscreen is more than three years old, throw it out.
- Some sunscreens include an expiration date. If the expiration date has passed, throw it out.
What you might not know…
SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays
SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays
SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays
So the difference between 30 and 50 is only about 1 percent. (I didn’t know that, did you?)
