A recent survey in my Facebook group, told me that many women over 50, worry about looking frumpy.

I totally relate to this too. I don’t want, or need to dress in a super trendy way, but I do want to look current and fresh – appropriate for my age, but in a good way.

Each decade seems to bring its own challenges, but this is what I’ve learned over the last few years.

Looking stylish and confident after 50 is entirely possible. But I believe it takes a bit more effort as we get older;

a) We need to be way more strategic about what we buy. Careful planning is the key.

b) We need to dig deep into our true ‘Style Personality’ and not get swayed by others.

c) Learn what really suits our body shape as it is NOW and let go of what used to look good in our 20’s, 30’s and even 40’s.

6 Top tips for banishing the frump:

    1. Investment Pieces:

Classic basics. Blazers, coats and boots can last for years if they are quality. (Check out sales for these)

Make sure these classics are looked after and kept in good condition. Buy them in your best neutrals, so they compliment everything else in your wardrobe. Also, don’t buy unless they fit your body shape really well, or you can get them tailored to fit.

     2. Add a little each year:

Keep your investment pieces current by adding a couple of  new things each season. i.e. the latest jean style. Tops with design elements that are more trendy. Wearing a classic blazer, with more modern shaped jeans works well.

     3. Colour:

Always buy in your best colours – especially your tops. Wearing the right colours near your face will ALWAYS make you feel younger.  See what happens in a Colour Analysis here

     4. Accessories:

By the time you get into your 50’s and 60’s, you will probably have collected some ‘good’ jewellery, that you cherish dearly. Consider mixing your good pieces with something that is very current.

I’ve just been reading that brooches are back for the autumn, but gold, layered chains are still going strong.

   5. Underwear:

Now is the time to really invest in good bras, pants and maybe even shape wear. Fabrics and design have definitely improved over the last five years and bigger pants and bras can still look feminine.

   6. Shoes:

I’ve already mentioned classic boots, but adding some modern shapes for each season, can make a such a difference. I know what you’re thinking… “but I need to be comfortable” Well thank goodness for trainers. These days, they are appropriate footwear for almost any outfit. But check out the latest shape and style.

There seems to be more availability for comfortable, nice looking footwear now. Try Sole Bliss (wide feet & bunions) Vivia and my personal favourite Deichmann.

Remember that style is subjective, and the most important thing is to feel confident and comfortable in what you wear. Embrace your personal style, and don’t be afraid to experiment until you find what makes you feel your best.
