Making Informed Choices for a more Sustainable Future

As the Christmas season approaches, so does one of the biggest shopping events of the year – Black Friday. Originally an American tradition, Black Friday has now taken a hold across the UK too.

Although Black Friday has become synonymous with overt consumerism, in recent years, a growing movement has emerged, encouraging more conscious consumption. For many people, the shift towards mindful and sustainable choices is reshaping the way we approach Black Friday, making us consider the social and environmental impact of our purchases.

The Dark Side of Black Friday:

Black Friday, once a single-day event has evolved into a week long (in some cases a month long) shopping spree marked by massive discounts and promotions. It’s great for the retailers but I believe we must consider the environmental and ethical consequences of this shopping frenzy!

The fast fashion industry, in particular, contributes to excessive waste and exploits labor, making it a focal point of concern for conscious consumers.

Conscious Consuming Defined:

Conscious consuming involves making deliberate choices that consider the broader impact of our purchases on the environment, society, and economy. It’s about being aware of the supply chain, ethical practices, and the overall sustainability of the products we buy. This mindset challenges the conventional Black Friday narrative, urging consumers to think beyond the allure of discounts and focus on making purchases that align with their values.

Tips for Conscious Consuming on Black Friday

Does it Really Have a Place in Your Wardrobe?:

  • When considering a clothing purchase, really think about how it will fit in with your overall wardrobe and how much use you will get out of it?

Research Brands and Products:

  • Before diving into the Black Friday sales, take the time to research the brands and products you’re interested in. Look for companies that prioritise sustainability, ethical sourcing, and fair labor practices. Many brands now provide detailed information about their commitment to social and environmental responsibility on their websites.

Support Local Businesses:

  • Consider diverting your spending towards local businesses. Supporting small, local shops not only contributes to the growth of your community but often ensures a smaller carbon footprint compared to purchasing from large corporations with extensive supply chains.

Quality Over Quantity:

  • Instead of succumbing to the temptation of buying as much as possible during Black Friday sales, focus on quality over quantity, investing in durable, well-made items, that will last for many wears.

As a clothes lover and Personal Stylist I love the thrill of buying something new, but in recent years, I am very mindful about, ‘cost per wear’, quality, washability and how it fits together with everything else in my wardrobe. I love a bargain, but I always ask the question “do I love it enough to pay pay full price?”

I used to find it really easy to get carried away in any kind of sale and buy things for the sake of it. As part of my role as a colour and wardrobe coach, I really encourage my clients to only buy what they know suits them and truly makes them happy.

If you find a bargain this Black Friday, please make it a happy and conscious buy, for you and the planet’s sake.
