Are you a bit scared of makeup? - arbonne mascaraI’m often told by clients, that as they get older, they get a bit scared by makeup.

Can you relate to any of these?

“I’m stuck in a rut”
“I don’t know what suits me any more”
“I feel self conscious”
“I don’t have time”
“I don’t know what to do with it”
“There is too much choice”

These questions and more have prompted me to do my best to address these issues.

Personally, I can’t say that I absolutely love wearing makeup, but as I’ve got older, I prefer the look of my face with it, rather than without it!

However, like me, there are probably 4 things you want from your makeup…

  • You don’t want to spend a lot of time putting makeup on in the mornings.
  • You want a natural look.
  • You need it to be easy.
  • You like products to be chemical and cruelty free

If you are choosing to fit makeup into your daily life, I think you will agree that it needs to be quick and easy?

Most women over 40 are beginning to notice a difference in their skin texture. Skin appears thinner and this often creates a patchy or uneven skin tone.

See below for my easy 5 step system for a basic, natural, glowing look.

Step 1 – Base

Beginning a makeup routine with a good base will even out your complexion, minimise fine lines and wrinkles and protect your skin from the elements.

If you like things simple and natural, a CC cream base is easy to apply. Choose a shade that’s as close to your natural skin tone for right now. For most of us this will vary between summer and winter.

Step 2 – Eyebrows (miss this step if you have great shaped natural brows)

These frame your face, make your eyes look more open and can instantly give you a more wide awake look.

Use a soft tipped pencil and light, upward strokes. Coating the hairs that you do have and adding in if you have any gaps. Make the highest part of the arch in line with your pupil.

Step 3 – Blusher

Adding a little colour to your cheeks, (especially in winter) will give you a healthy glow.

If you have a cool skin tone, use a pink based colour. If your skin tone is warm, try peach or coral tones.

Sweep the colour over your cheek bones, into your hairline, using a large angled brush and blend, blend, blend! (No Aunt Sally’s here!)

Step 4 – Mascara

I always recommend a push and wiggle technique to coat the lashes. For top lashes, gently push the wand underneath the lashes, as close to the eye as possible. Hold for a second pushing up, then ‘wiggle’ the wand out to the ends.

For the bottom lashes go from the top and wiggle down.

Step 5 – Lips

This is the area where women who don’t wear much makeup, get a bit self-conscious!

Please don’t, just start with a gentle lip gloss if you don’t like a full on lipstick. The colour is sheer and light. They keep your lips hydrated and you can also use over a lipstick to lighten it’s colour.

Lip gloss is quick and easy to apply as they generally have a wand applicator, rather than the bullet shape of a lipstick.

Keep it in your bag for an easy touch up throughout the day.

So there we have it. 5 easy steps to a natural effortless makeup.

You can always add to this for an evening look, when you have more time, or when you gain more confidence.

Please do get in touch if you would like a personal makeup lesson. I would love to help.
