When my son got married, I thought it would be easy!

Getting ready for a special occasion, without getting my knickers in a twist, proved to be a challenge. I thought it would be easy to find the right outfit. I’ve always loved colour, clothes and dressing up, so I didn’t think I would be a problem with this occasion.

Wrong! I struggled!

I wasn’t a qualified Image Consultant then, but even if I had been, I think I would have found the whole thing a bit tricky. Being Mother of the Groom or Bride, is such an important role. It’s a huge and memorable event and also one that will be recorded in photos and videos for ever.

It’s also a very long day and comfort and ease is essential. (You don’t want to get caught on camera fiddling with your neck or hemline)

So what did I do?

Just went shopping, thinking I would spot the ‘perfect outfit’ easily. I knew that I didn’t want the traditional style of shift dress and a little stiff jacket, but I hadn’t really thought through what I did want.

In and out of dozens of shops I trawled and found endless variations of the traditional style, large flowered body con, sexy and revealing, frumpy, uncomfortable and all together wrong for me.

What I should have done

Planning ahead is key to any special occasion. Make lists and allow plenty of time.

Fast forward 12 years and having helped many other women prepare for their special occasion I now have a check list I can pass on…

  1. Set aside time in your diary for on/offline shopping
  2. Use Google or Pinterest for ideas of the kind of thing you like. Starting a private Pinterest Board, is a great idea for collecting images, or save images to your phone or computer.
  3. Know what your best colours are and stick to these, without compromise.
  4. Make a list of everything you will need. Underwear – main outfit – outerwear – shoes – bag – jewellery – hat.
  5. Prepare for the shopping day:
Physical shopping –

a) Have something nourishing to eat. Prepare drinks and snacks to take.

b) Wear good underwear and clothes that take minimum effort to take on and off.  Comfortable shoes.

c) Take with you anything you already have. Images, accessories, colour swatches etc.

Virtual Shopping –

a) Make a list of the potential online shops.  The large department stores can be great as you get access to different retailers but with one order point.

b) Make sure to read product descriptions, reviews, and return policies thoroughly before making a purchase.

c) Double-check the sizing guide to ensure a perfect fit. (order 2 sizes, if you’re not sure)

Above all, do try and keep a positive mental attitude. Your mantra needs to be “I will find the perfect outfit, with ease and fun”

Thanks so much for reading and see you next time
