Why can it be so hard to stick to your January Resolutions?
People often ask me How do I Stick to my New Years Resolutions?
if you have made any resolutions around healthier eating this month, you probably started out with wonderful intentions and enthusiasm and then it gets half way through January and things start to get really tough?
It’s often the time of year that we commit to cutting back on the things that we know aren’t good for us, causing weight gain, energy dips and trouble sleeping.
With my experience in coaching people through a Healthy Habits reset programme, and my own experience, I’ve found a few things that can really help keep you on track with your intentions.
Top Tips
- Don’t be too tough on yourself. January can be cold and bleak, the last thing you want is to start depriving yourself of too many things you enjoy. My advice is to make a list of the ‘healthy things’ that you really like to eat and focus on adding as many of these to your daily diet as possible.
- Soup is your friend (and warm nourishing drinks) I love mixing combinations of vegetables and pulses and making big batches of nourishing and filling soups. Have some in your fridge at all times, so you can have a tasty lunch or snack at any time. If you use a protein powder, try adding a small amount to a cup of hot milk, milk substitute, or water.
- Think of January as a time to gently reset and go slowly. Changing habits doesn’t happen over night, but changing one or two in January and the another couple in February and so on, will soon make a huge difference.
- Always have nutrition in mind, think of the nutritional value of the food you are eating. For example, add protein and a little good fat, to all your meals and snacks. This will keep you feeling satisfied and your energy levels will be more stable.
- Try not to compare your body with someone else’s, or how you were 20 years ago. We are all different shapes and sizes and I think it’s healthier to work with where you’re at now, rather than setting unrealistic goals.
Good luck and if you want to know more about the plan that I have coached people through, just pop me a message here.
