Getting to know your Face Shape, is part of the Body Shaping stage of the Style Consultation.
This gives us an insight into the very best necklines to wear and can also help when choosing glasses and other accessories. Knowing your face shape helps you to bring balance to your whole look.
It’s important to remember, that as with your Style Personality and Body Shape, you may be a mix of 2 or more shapes, but you will probably have one that is dominant.
Most people have a similarity to the shape to their face and their body – but not always
Case Study
One of my most recent Stye clients has the following characteristics.
Style Personality – Natural/Classic
Body Shape – Inverted Triangle (very angular and slim)
Face Shape – Round
A very interesting combination of opposing face and body shapes.
But in terms of shapes to wear, it was fun to discover that we could easily choose necklines and accessory shapes that soften her very angular shoulders and collar bones and give more structure to her found face.
We chose combinations of structured fabrics and patterns, but with a softness to them. i.e. soft V neck, geometric earrings.
Thereby bringing a lovely balance to her whole look.
5 Most Common Face Shapes
1. Round
- Chin is usually round and full
- Cheekbones are the widest part of the face
- Forehead is moderately broad
- Face width is approximately two thirds that of the length. The face looks as almost as wide as it is long
V-necks and scoop necks can create the illusion of length
2. Oval
- Inverted egg shape
- Face can be divided into 3 equal sections between the hairline, nose tip and the chin
- Eyes are spaced equally apart (1 eye distance between the eyes)
- Slightly rounded at the chin
Most necklines suit oval faces, but choosing based on neck length and hairstyle will enhance your overall appearance. (see me below)
3. Square
- Face appears to be as wide as it is long
- Chin is broad,
- Cheekbones are broad,
- Forehead is narrow in height (between the eyes and the hairline)
- Forehead, cheeks and jawline are the same width.
- Square face may become round with weight gain
Rounded necklines or scoop necks can soften the angles.
4. Oblong
- Jawline/chin is square
- Hairline is often square
- Face is longer than it is wide
- Forehead, cheekbones and jawline are as wide as each other
Boat Neck or Cowl Neck can widen and soften.
5. Heart
- The chin is narrow and pointed
- The forehead is moderately broad and may have a widow’s peak
- The forehead is the widest part of the face
- The jawline is the narrowest part of the face
Sweetheart necklines will accentuate the neck and decolletage, which balances out a wider forehead
