Older Women in TV & Film
At the weekend I was watching a lovely BBC TV series called Magpie Murders and the leading female role was played by the gorgeous Lesley Manville https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesley_Manville
I really enjoyed this series, not just because it was entertaining. I really loved watching 67 year old Lesley looking elegant, stylish and ‘normal’
Credit to the wardrobe people on this production. Her colours complemented her natural colouring, everything she appeared in was a great fit and accentuated her fab figure, without being either too old or too young.
Not just a one off
In recent years, I’ve noticed a real shift in the representation of older women in film and television. Traditionally, older women have been relegated to supporting roles, playing mothers or grandmothers. While the leading roles were reserved for younger actresses. However, this has changed, and now we are seeing more and more older women in leading roles, breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes.

Demand
There is a growing demand for stories that reflect the diversity of human experiences. As society becomes more aware of the importance of representation and inclusion, we are seeing a growing appetite for stories that reflect the experiences of people from all walks of life, including older women. This demand has created opportunities for older women to take on leading roles and showcase their talent and range as actors.
Baby Boomers
I’m a Baby Boomer and as my generation ages, we are becoming a more significant demographic for media consumption. Older women are a crucial part of this demographic, and the industry is responding by creating more content that speaks to them. This has led to a rise in the number of shows and films that feature older women in leading roles.
