A Guide to Shopping for Clothes Online for Women Over 50

Shopping for clothes online can feel like a double-edged sword — endless options at your fingertips, but plenty of chances to get it wrong. For women over 50, this process can be even more challenging as body shapes change, colour preferences evolve, and the fashion industry doesn’t always keep us in mind. As a personal style and colour consultant, I’ve helped hundreds of women navigate this digital wardrobe maze. The good news? With a few smart strategies, online shopping can become one of your most empowering style tools.

Whether you’re updating your wardrobe for a new phase of life, simplifying your closet, or simply want to feel more confident in what you wear, here’s how to shop online with confidence and style.

5 Steps to Online Shopping Success

1. Know Your Colours and Stick to Them
One of the biggest style secrets for women over 50 is wearing colours that enhance your natural colouring. As we age, skin tone and hair colour shift, and the shades that once looked fabulous may now feel harsh or dull. Cool-toned women may find softer blues, greys, and plums more flattering, while warm-toned women often glow in earthy tones like olive, rust, or soft peach.

Stick to your best neutrals and add accent colours that bring life to your face. Many websites allow filtering by colour – a great way to avoid falling into the black trap (which can often look draining on mature skin unless it’s one of your best colours).

2. Always Check the Size Guide (Every Time)
Size can vary wildly between brands – even within the same store. Don’t rely on your usual size; instead, grab a tape measure and compare your bust, waist, and hip measurements with the store’s size chart. If you’re between sizes, look at the fabric composition. Stretchy materials like jersey or knits can be more forgiving.

Bonus tip: read the product description carefully. Terms like “relaxed fit,” “oversized,” or “fitted” are small clues that make a big difference in how something will hang on your body.

3. Read Reviews — The Good, The Bad, and Especially the Detailed
Customer reviews are gold when shopping online. Look for feedback from women who mention their age, height, or body shape, their insights are often far more useful than generic praise. Pay attention to comments about quality, fit, and whether the item runs large or small. Photos in reviews can also give a more realistic view of the item than the model shots.

Be cautious if there are no reviews, or if all the reviews are vague or overly enthusiastic without specifics.

4. Focus on Fabrics and Finishes
Certain fabrics simply feel better and drape more elegantly, especially as we age. Natural fibres like cotton, linen, silk, and wool tend to breathe better and sit more comfortably on the skin. Also, look for good finishing details: are the seams tidy? Are buttons sewn securely? Is there lining where you’d want it?

Poor-quality fabric can make even the best-designed item look cheap — and we deserve better.

5. Start with Reliable Retailers, Then Branch Out
Stick with shops you know and trust, especially if they cater to a mature audience or focus on timeless styles rather than fast fashion trends. Once you’ve built confidence in a few brands and understand how their sizing and fit work for you, you can experiment with new ones.

Some stores offer virtual try-ons or styling advice –  use these services when available. Most brands also now allow easy returns, which takes some of the risk out of trying something new.

Style Made Easy at Any Age

Online shopping doesn’t have to be overwhelming or disappointing. In fact, with a bit of preparation and style insight, it can be one of the most empowering ways to dress beautifully and authentically — especially for women over 50. Know your colours, understand your shape, read the fine print, and trust your instincts. With these tools, you’ll build a wardrobe that feels just as good as it looks.

Because style doesn’t have an age limit — and neither should your confidence.
