After 13 years of working as a colour and image consultant here in Eastbourne and across East Sussex, I’ve had the privilege of looking inside hundreds of women’s wardrobes. And while every woman is different, there are some very common themes that come up again and again.

If you’ve ever stood in front of a full wardrobe and thought, “I’ve got nothing to wear,” you are absolutely not alone. In fact, it’s one of the most common things women say to me.

The good news? It’s rarely because you need to go shopping. More often, it’s about how your wardrobe has slowly built up over time — without a clear plan for the woman you are now.

Here are some of the most common things I see, and some gentle ways to start improving them.

1. Lots of clothes, but very few complete outfits

Many wardrobes are full of individual items that were bought for a specific occasion, but don’t mix easily with anything else.

A gentle fix:
Try creating a few go-to outfits you know work well. Hang them together or take photos of them on your phone. This makes getting dressed so much easier on busy mornings.

2. Clothes for a life you no longer live

We often hold onto clothes for:

  • A job we no longer have

  • A lifestyle that’s changed

  • A body shape that’s different now

A gentle fix:
Ask yourself: “Would I buy this again for my life now?” If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go.

3. Too many dark, heavy colours

As we get older, many women naturally drift towards black, navy and grey — often without realising how draining they can be for the face.

A gentle fix:
Try adding softer or brighter colours near your face. A scarf, top, or necklace in a flattering colour can make a surprisingly big difference.

4. Clothes that technically fit — but don’t feel right

If you’re constantly tugging, adjusting or feeling self-conscious, that’s a sign something isn’t quite working.

A gentle fix:
Comfort and confidence go hand in hand. When clothes feel good on your body, you naturally look better too. Be honest, If it’s uncomfortable – give it away!

5. A wardrobe that doesn’t reflect who you are now

Our style changes as our lives change — and that’s completely normal. But many women feel stuck between their old style and not knowing what suits them now.

A gentle fix:
Give yourself permission to evolve. Your style should fit the woman you are today — not who you were 10 or 20 years ago.

My recent experience

I moved house in December and downsized quite considerably. This meant a good hard look at my wardrobe and giving it a good cull. It felt good! I now have the least items I have ever had, but I know that everything I have now, has a place in my life. Most items have multiple uses, so I can mix and match effortlessly and my palette of colours make me happy every time I open my wardrobe doors  😍

We all need a reminder…

If getting dressed feels harder than it used to, it’s not a personal failing — it’s usually a wardrobe that just needs a little fresh perspective.

As a colour and image consultant based in Eastbourne, I help women over 50 create wardrobes that feel easier, more flattering, and more like them. Often, small changes make a much bigger difference than people expect.

If you’d like some personal help with this, I’m always happy to have a friendly chat and talk through how I work.
