Why use a serum?

A question I get asked often, especially by women who like a really simple skincare regime.

Adding a serum to your routine, either once a day, or morning and evening can really benefit the health and the look of your skin. “But if I already use a moisturiser, why do I need a serum too?” I hear you ask.

I like to think my skincare routine is like taking care of  a baby. We would keep it clean, we feed it and protect it…

Step 1 Keep it clean

This is your cleansing and exfoliating stage.  Cleaning off your makeup and any dirt that has accumulated over night or during the day. An exfoliation 2-3 times per week can also be really beneficial. This keeps your pores clean, helps the turnover of skin cells and will give you a healthy glow.

Step 2 Feed it

This is where your serum comes in. A serum is lighter in texture than moisturiser and will penetrate deeper through the skins layers. Getting to work on collagen production, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and generally helping your skin look it’s best.

This is probably a good time to mention that not all serums are equal.  When deciding what to go for, look for high levels of active ingredients, such as Vitamin C, Backuchiol (plant based retinol) and Ferulic Acid. These ingredients will all work synergistically, to give you the best possible results.

I also look for products that are not tested on animals and are free from harmful chemicals.  Arbonne’s not allowed list

Step 3 Protect it

This step is where we add a ‘top layer’ to protect our skin from damage. From extremes of temperature, free radicals, pollution etc.  This step also prepares a base for any makeup we may choose to wear.

So there we have the answer to the questions ‘why use a serum?’ Because a good one, will seriously improve the health and look of your skin!
